“Leave it to some New York City girls to invent a new literary philosophy, build a website, and plan a series of events which promises to be as steamy as a Manhattan summer—all in the space of a year.”

The Jezebelle 2000 tour

In 2000, Lauren Sanders joined forces with two poets, Elena Georgiou and Cheryl B, who also had books coming out that year. Together, they created a legendary summer book tour they called Jezebelle2000: The Glam Lit Tour.

They modeled the tour on spoken-word tours already out there—shoutout to the long-running Sister Spit. Jezebelle2000 added a bit of dolled-up charm to the mix. They worshipped Bowie and Queen and Riot Grrrls. They created a manifesto declaring the Glam Lit Movement open to anyone who craved “a bit more glamour in the traditionally staid world of literary readings.”

The Jezebelles read in independent bookstores, sex shops, and clubs. They joined forces with guest readers and drag kings and go-go dancers in the cities they visited, sprinkling glitter throughout the land.

They sold books and their CD, Sinful Idolatrous Rituals, created with DJ Derrick Kardos of the House of Diabolique.

Sadly both Derrick and Cheryl B have since passed, Cheryl more than a decade ago and Derrick just this year. But these two glamorous, talented, gorgeously rough kids from New Jersey live on in their words and music. Have a listen!
